WHA 2016 Nominating Awards Committee to Meet in Early September

The 2016 Nominating Awards Committee will meet in September to consider nominating a WHA chair-elect, at-large members, two new physician leader at-large positions for the WHA Board and candidates for the Trustee and Distinguished Service Award (information on these two awards can be found on the WHA website at www.wha.org/award-program-information.aspx.)

At its April 2016 meeting, the WHA Board created two additional at-large director seats and requested that the Nominating and Awards Committee recommend physician leaders actively employed by or designated representatives of WHA member hospitals or health systems. The Committee will consider nominations for these physician leader at-large director seats at its September meeting, along with other nominations.

Ideal candidates for the physician leader at-large director seats should occupy a senior clinical leadership position and have responsibility for strategic direction and oversight of medical affairs.

EMTALA Compliance Focus of July 13 WHA Member Forum Webinar

On July 13, WHA will be offering a complimentary WHA Member Forum webinar focused on EMTALA. “A Practical Approach to Complying with EMTALA,” co-presented by Sarah Coyne and Jon Kammerzelt of Quarles & Brady LLP, is the first session in WHA’s monthly legal and regulatory hot topics webinar series. This presentation will focus on identifying where and when EMTALA applies, the processes and documentation required by EMTALA and ways to meet these requirements. There is no fee for this webinar, but pre-registration is required. The series is intended for WHA hospital and corporate members as a member benefit, and will include a range of topics, each presented by a representative of a WHA corporate member law firm.

Annual Workshop for Hospital Foundation Leaders Scheduled August 16

Hospital foundation directors, their board members and hospital executives are invited to attend “Prescription for Success: A Workshop for Hospital Foundations” August 16 in Wisconsin Dells. This year’s workshop will focus on moving your donors along the continuum of philanthropy, discussing pipeline-building strategies at all levels of giving, including annual giving, major gifts giving and planned giving. 

With the partnership and support of the Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA), the Wisconsin Office of Rural Health (WORH), and the Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative (RWHC), this annual workshop is available at a minimal cost to hospital and hospital foundation staff.

Fall and Injury Prevention Expert Pat Quigley to Lead Workshop, August 17

On August 17, WHA is bringing Patricia Quigley, PhD, nationally-renowned expert in clinical practice innovations in patient safety, to Wisconsin to lead a one-day workshop focused on the state of science specific to fall and injury prevention, regulatory guidelines and best practice approaches to reduce falls and injuries.

This is a rare opportunity for your quality and patient safety leaders, managers, front-line nursing staff and nursing leaders to work one-on-one with Quigley, who has a legacy of leadership in health care outcomes related to functional improvement, rehabilitation outcomes and continuum of care. Call for Nominations: 2016 Global Vision Community Partnership Award
Nominations due to WHA Foundation by July 15


Honor one of your hospital’s community health projects by submitting a nomination for a 2016 Global Vision Community Partnership Award, presented by the WHA Foundation.

This competitive grant award is presented to a community health initiative that successfully addresses a documented community health need. The Award, launched by the WHA Foundation in 1993, seeks to recognize and support ongoing projects that support community health.

Any WHA hospital member can nominate a community health project. The project must have been in existence for a minimum of two years and must be a collaborative or partnership project that includes a WHA member hospital and an organization(s) within the community. The official call for nominations for the 2016 Award is included in this week’s packet.

President’s Column: “We are all in this together” – In Remembrance of Kitty Rhoades

Last weekend we were stunned to learn of the death of Department of Health Services Secretary Kitty Rhoades. The staff at WHA and hospital leaders throughout Wisconsin join many others all across the state in mourning Kitty’s passing. We are deeply saddened. 

Secretary Rhoades was a leader, a partner, a champion who has left an indelible mark on health care policy and will be gratefully remembered by the countless people she helped during her career in public service. 

An endearing straight-shooter, Kitty was, among many things, a problem solver and frequently reminded us that “We are all in this together.” Kitty’s intelligence, wit, humility and affable style allowed her to move easily among disparate organizations and opinions, and build bridges where they once seemed impossible. 

Kitty was a mentor and role model for many of us who had the true privilege of working for her or with her for nearly 20 years. She was not only a tremendous public servant and colleague, she was also our friend. She was one of a kind, and will be sorely missed. 

Our most heartfelt condolences go out to Kitty’s family, whom she loved deeply and spoke of often, and to her many colleagues, present and past, in the Legislature, Governor Walker’s Office, the Department of Health Services and all across Wisconsin health care.

Hospitals and Partners Practice Plan for Responding to Highly Infectious Diseases

Last month, over 150 hospital, public health, and various first responder personnel from South Central Wisconsin—including 19 hospitals—gathered at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison to practice the state’s plan for the appropriate transport and care of a suspected or confirmed Ebola patient.

During the height of the Ebola epidemic, the primary risk factor for contracting Ebola was serving as a health care practitioner. In addition to hosting last month’s exercise, the South Central Healthcare Coalition has made federal funding available to hospitals and their regional partners to provide an efficient and safe response to the threat of Ebola. Although Ebola has faded from the headlines, the state’s Ebola plan is adaptable to other highly infectious and pathogenic diseases, including SARS and MERS-CoV.

The South Central Healthcare Coalition is a group of health care organizations and emergency preparedness partners (e.g., hospitals, EMS, trauma, and public health) in 14 counties in South Central Wisconsin that collaborate for the common goal of uniform and unified response to emergencies, including pandemics.

Among the hospitals that participated in the Ebola exercise were St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, the region’s Ebola assessment hospital, and the University of Wisconsin Hospital, the region’s Ebola treatment hospital. These hospitals, as well as other hospitals across the state, have made significant investments in Ebola planning, patient isolation, and equipping and training staff in the appropriate donning and doffing of personal protective equipment.
