2003 Award Winners

2003 WHA Awards -- Brochure Announcing Winners (9/2003) (pdf)

Distinguished Service Award

WHA proudly presents its 2003 Distinguished Service Award to Tom Miller, III, vice president of Menomonie's Myrtle Werth Hospital. In nominating Tom for this award, here is what some had to say:

"Throughout his career in Northwestern Wisconsin, Tom has been a model of service to the health care industry and the WHA." - Michael Karuschak, Jr., CEO, Amery Regional Medical Center.

"Mr. Miller has made valuable contributions to our local hospital, the patients it serves and our community-at-large." - Hank Simpson, MD, medical director, Red Cedar Medical Center.

"T3 has never been afraid to speak out for what is right, but does so in a soft, factual, respectful and persuasive manner. This is leadership. He works quietly and fervently on many issues, putting in incredibly long hours and always giving the impression that your issue is by far the most important. He is a personal and professional giant, and I urge you to consider him for the 2003 Distinguished Service Award." - Vicki Jess, patient care administrator, Myrtle Werth Hospital.

"Tom's value, style, skills, and approach to people are the qualities of an ethical, visionary and balanced leader for health care." - Marian Furlong, president and CEO, Hudson Hospital and members of the WHA West Central region.

Linda Smith has been instrumental in the creation and rise of Aurora BayCare Medical Center in Green Bay since coming to Wisconsin from Los Angeles two years ago. Under her leadership, the hospital has successfully recruited and hired a staff of more than 1,300 while maintaining less than 3 percent vacancy and 6 percent turnover, both better than statewide averages.
