Enhancing Patient and Staff Safety in the Behavioral Health Environment

Program Description
This program will be comprised of three components designed to promote safety and effective interventions for staff members working with potentially violent individuals in behavioral health settings. Faculty will discuss methods for assessing individuals in treatment, prevention factors and intervention strategies for emergency situations, as well as stress impact and resources for staff members following these events.

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
  1. Identify reasons for challenging behavior to occur
  2. Identify key factors in the prevention of crisis situations
  3. Discussion responsibilities necessary in the safe resolution of crisis situations
  4. Lisa common causes of critical incident stress
  5. List the effects of critical incident stress
  6. Understand the impact of working with trauma survivors or in critical incidents

Faculty
Michael Boland is a clinical educator/crisis training specialist for the Crisis Training Institute at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and is a member of the UPMC Disaster Response Team and the Allegheny County Critical Incident Stress Management Team. He is also an approved instructor for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). He has 14 years of experience in both hospital and corporate safety and security.

Robert Fonte is the program director of the Crisis Training Institute at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and is a member of the Pittsburgh Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Team. His work experience includes over 20 years working as a psychiatric nurse and nurse manager. His experience also includes developing and/or teaching numerous training programs in crisis management and critical incident stress management. Mr. Fonte assisted in the development of the curriculum and continues to provide training to Pennsylvania's Disaster Crisis Outreach and Referral Teams (DCORT) and disaster coordinators. In addition, he is a coordinator of the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic Mental Health Disaster Response Team and has assisted senior management at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in the development and implementation of the mental health disaster response plan for the UPMC Health System.

David Julian is a program coordinator for the Crisis Training Institute at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and is a member of the UPMC Disaster Response Team and the Allegheny County Critical Incident Stress Management Team. He has worked for 22 years as a clinician on a variety of inpatient psychiatric units, residential treatment facilities, and psychiatric emergency response in the community. Mr. Julian is also an approved instructor for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) and is one of the original authors of the comprehensive crisis management program.

Jeffrey Magill is a clinical educator for the Crisis Training Institute at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. He is also a trainer/member of the UPMC Disaster Response Team and is a member of the Butler County Critical Incident Stress Management Team. Mr. Magill is an approved instructor for the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF). He has over 13 years of experience providing crisis and disaster response and intervention in a variety of areas including community, hospital, school, residential, and workplace settings.

How the Audioconference Will Work
Dial-in instructions, on-line login instructions and any other reference materials will be emailed to each registrant approximately three days prior to the conference. If you do not receive them by this date, please email lgeishirt@wha.org.

It is the responsibility of the registrant to access presentation materials prior to the day of the event. If your e-mail address changes, you do not receive an e-mail with instructions from WHA, or if you are unable to open presentation materials, please contact Lisa Geishirt at WHA two days prior to the event to allow time to address the issue.

Substitution, Transfer and Cancellation Policy
Cancellations received in writing up to five business days prior to an event will be given a full refund less a $50 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations received less than five business days prior and day-of-program no-shows. Substitutions are accepted.
