Conducting a DRG Audit

Audioconference
August 28, 2008
Time: 10-11:30 a.m. CENTRAL TIME

Register for this event online:
August 28, 2008 ($295 per line)

Program Description
Accurate DRG coding can improve your hospital's financial performance and prevent unnecessary paperwork and payment delays. This audioconference will give your staff the skills to audit their work and identify errors before problems arise. The audioconference begins with an overview of diagnosis-related groups and case-rate systems, including the Case Mix Index and the new severity refinement - CCs and MCCs. This is followed by a discussion of key definitions, concepts and documentation rules. Problem DRGs also will be reviewed, along with special issues that affect coding.

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
  • Discuss the DRG payment system including the new severity refinement.
  • Explain how the DRG grouping logic determines payment for inpatient services.
  • Identify the critical aspects of compliance issues surrounding DRGs, including related case-rate payment systems.
  • Validate the significance of developing the correct principal diagnosis.
  • Compare the role of secondary diagnosis and procedure codes for proper DRG grouping through CCs and MCCs.
  • Evaluate the process in auditing special combinations of DRGs.
  • Discuss auditing for special features of DRGs, including the Present on Admission indicator, discharge status and interfaces to various outpatient services.
  • Critique the process of conducting a DRG audit, the purpose, process and outcomes that can be expected.
  • Identify DRG issues that may be addressed through the Recovery Audit Contractor program.
