The Executive's Role in IT

Webinar

Register for this event online:
August 5, 2008 ($295 per line)

Program Description
Of the many "direct-reports" under a health care executive, the CIO or IT Director poses some of the greatest management challenges due to the critical role IT is taking in the delivery of patient care and the complex nature of technology. Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) and Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) have taken IT to the forefront of patient care, while the cost of Hospital Information Systems (HIS) have grown increasingly difficult to fund in light of dwindling reimbursement. Add challenges like outsourcing, Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs) and Personal Health Records (PHRs) on the Internet, the IT function poses challenges to even the most tech-savvy executive.

This seminar will address all of these issues, giving practical, real-world advice based on 15 years of experience from The Hunter Group (THG) in assessing the IT function at over 100 of the largest and most complex facilities in the country. The speaker has also consulted at over 50 small hospitals of under 100 beds and will stress the different approaches large versus small-sized facilities must take.

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
  1. Discuss how you manage board of director "experts" in IT
  2. Discuss how much should you invest in IT and benchmarks for capital vs. operating expenses
  3. Describe what role should executives play in key IT projects such as strategic planning, system selections, contract negotiations and implementations

Who Should Participate
Chief Executive Officers/Administrators
Chief Financial Officers
Chief Operating Officers

Faculty
Vincent Ciotti, Co-founder and Principal, HIS Professionals, LLC
Vince Ciotti is the co-founder and principal with the consulting firm HIS Professionals, LLC. In its 20 years of providing IT consulting to hospitals, HIS Pros has assisted over 300 hospitals in assessing, planning for, selecting and negotiating contracts for HIS systems.

Ciotti spent 15 years providing IT consulting to The Hunter Group and Navigant Consulting, and has seen every HIS vendors' system in actual operation, in both "turnaround" situations, as well as successful implementations. He has been a frequent speaker at national conferences such as ACHE, HFMA and HIMSS, and has contributed numerous articles to industry journals. His 40 years of experience in the health care industry includes 15 years working for leading HIS vendors in marketing and implementation, so he knows both sides of the challenges hospitals face in selecting and implementing systems.

The views expressed by the speaker do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions or the Wisconsin Hospital Association.
