Program Description:
Discover the roles and responsibilities as a trustee of a hospital. This session will include making the most of your time in the boardroom, conflicts of interest, strategic planning and hospital staff relationships.
Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Identify trends in successful roles as a board member.
- Determine "problem areas" to avoid as a board member.

Session 2
Board-CEO Relationships
April 22, 2008

Program Description:
Using research gathered from over 75 hospital board chairs and CEOs, this session will discuss how to attain effective relationship leading to reduced CEO turnover and successful hospitals.

- Describe key aspects of a successful board-CEO relationship.
- Identify steps to creating prosperous board-CEO relationships.

Session 3
Board-Physician Relationships
June 3, 2008

Program Description:
The board has full authority over medical staff credentialing. Determine how an dwhere the board is involved, how to measure performance, provide feedback, and ensure accountability.

At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Describe key aspects of a successful board-physician relationship.
- Define areas where board members are involved in medical staff credentialing.

Faculty Bios
Fletcher Brown, J.D. is a shareholder with Davis & Wilkerson, P.C. in Austin. His practice focuses on administrative, health, transactional and governance matters related to hospitals, physicians and other health care providers. Brown's experience includes general counsel services to numerous public and not-for-profit hospitals, licensing and regulatory matters for health care facilities and physicians before a variety of state and federal agencies. Brown is Board Certified, Health Law, Texas Board of Legal Specialization (2002-Present). Brown is a 1991 graduate of Baylor University School of Law. He is the current president of the Health Law Section of the Austin Bar Association and is admitted to practice before the United States District Courts of the Western District and before the United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit.
Kenneth R. Cohen, Ph.D., is the president of The Synergy Organization, a national executive search and executive assessment firm he founded in Philadelphia in 1989. Cohen has 24 years of experience as an organizational psychologist and executive search consultant. He has conducted many seminars on Best Practices in recruitment, selection, leadership development and retention strategies to many professional healthcare organizations. He earned his master's degree and PhD at Temple University and his bachelor degree in psychology at Dickinson College.
Christy Stephenson, RN, is nationally recognized as an effective and passionate health care leader. She recently joined TRG Healthcare as partner. Previously, she was president and CEO of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, where she led an organizational transformation culminating in recognition by the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program in 2004. This was the fourth hospital in the nation to achieve such distinction for organizational performance excellence.

Per Session Fee: $295.00 for one phone line per site
Entire Series: $800.00 for one phone line per site

Additional phone lines will be billed at $295.00 each.
How the Audioconference Will Work
Dial-in instructions and any other reference materials will be emailed to each registrant approximately three days prior to the conference. If you do not receive them by this date, please email Lisa Geishirt at lgeishirt@wha.org.
It is the responsibility of the registrant to access presentation materials prior to the day of the event. If your e-mail address changes, you do not receive an e-mail with instructions from WHA, or if you are unable to open presentation materials, please contact
Lisa Geishirt at WHA two days prior to the event to allow time to address the issue.
Substitution, Transfer and Cancellation Policy
Cancellations received in writing up to five business days prior to an event will be given a full refund less a $50 processing fee. No refunds will be given for cancellations received less than five business days prior and day-of-program no-shows. Substitutions are accepted.
