How to Have a Margin Discussion With Your Doctors

Webinar
October 14, 2008
Time: 12 -1 p.m. CENTRAL TIME

Register for this event online:
October 14, 2008 ($295 per line)

Program Description
Hospital executives struggle daily with razor-thin operating margins. Clinical practice patterns, especially by physicians in key specialty areas such as orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiac services and high-volume medical admissions, make the difference between profitable or unprofitable service lines. Whether these physicians are partners or adversaries can depend on how well and how often hospital management keeps them "in the loop" on hospital financial matters.

This webinar will prepare participants to conduct productive discussions with their physicians that will enhance physicians' understanding and appreciation of the challenges and how they can help. This webinar will include the rationale of involving physicians in operating margin discussions, ready-to-use slides on national trends that introduce and frame the topic for physician discussions, and examples of data as the lingua franca between administrators and clinicians. In addition, the presenter will identify specific "call to action" items for key physicians, strategies to deal with problem physicians, a checklist of areas to address with physicians in improving margins, and a communication plan for ongoing interaction.

Learning Objectives
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
  1. Understand the most important trends impacting clinical service line and hospital operating margins.
  2. Understand how to quantify their physicians' specific clinical practices that impact profitability.
  3. Understand how to engage physicians in a data-based discussion of hospital operating margins and how physicians can have a positive impact.
