The Challenges of Providing Psychiatric Services

Program Description
Recent studies have suggested that behavioral health disorders will represent the leading cause of disability in the US by 2010. Other research has suggested that as many as 1 in 4 general hospital inpatients have a co-occurring behavioral health disorder. Yet, the number of hospitals that offer behavioral health services has actually been declining in recent years. Competition for capital, reimbursement pressures and staffing shortages are often cited as some of the key obstacles to provision of these services. However, none of these are insurmountable issues that should limit the effective development of services that are critical to improving the health status of most communities.

Learning Objectives:
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
  1. Discuss key trends affecting the demand for psychiatric and substance abuse services
  2. Describe the challenges inherent in providing these services
  3. Discuss ways to meet the challenges and provide services in a fiscally responsive manner
