WHA Applauds Senate Vote to Advance Interstate Physician Licensure Compact

Attribute this statement to WHA President/CEO Eric Borgerding:

MADISON (November 6, 2015)
“Recruiting and retaining enough physicians to serve the people of Wisconsin continues to be a challenge for hospitals and health systems. Addressing the current and impending physician shortage in Wisconsin has been a top priority for the Wisconsin Hospital Association for many years.

The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact is another positive step toward addressing our state’s health care workforce needs. AB 253 will establish an expedited licensure process for those physicians who meet the Compact’s eligibility criteria and want to practice in multiple states, including in Wisconsin. So far, 11 states have adopted the Compact including Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. This Compact will help decrease the time between successfully recruiting a physician to Wisconsin and licensing that physician to serve patients in our communities.

On behalf of nearly 140 member hospitals throughout the state of Wisconsin, WHA applauds the Senate’s action today and the leadership of Representative Nancy VanderMeer and Senator Sheila Harsdorf in shepherding this overwhelmingly bipartisan legislation through the legislative process.”

NOTE: Assembly Bill 253, as amended by Senate Amendment 1, must still be concurred with by the Wisconsin State Assembly before being sent to the Governor’s desk for his signature.
