Workforce
Among the many issues facing the field of health care, none is more important to its long-term future than solving the growing workforce crisis. Currently, the vacancy rate for nurses in Wisconsin hospitals is running about 7%, with a vacancy rate of about 8% for pharmacists, according to a WHA Workforce Survey among hospitals taken in 2001.
Hospitals are taking various steps to address personnel shortages. Many have formed partnerships and mentoring programs with local high schools and technical colleges so students can begin training for a health care occupation-and work part time in some cases-while they go to school. Over the last year, wages to registered nurses and radiology technicians have increased 8 percent, while wage increases to pharmacists are reported in the 15-17% range. These expenses to health care providers trigger increases in health care costs for consumers, too.
This section provides more information on how Wisconsin hospitals are working to solve this critical issue, along with workforce-related resources.
