WHA Recognition Program Gathers and Celebrates the Stories of Caring

2002 Manual -- Wisconsin Health Care Employee Pride Program Participants (pdf)

June, 2002

Celebrate what you want to see more of! - Tom Peters
On May 30, 2002, in Wausau, WHA honored 58 professionals representing 19 health care occupations for the contributions they make every day to their patients, colleagues, hospitals and communities. Each participating hospital sent one representative to the ceremony, who had written an essay on what their health care occupation meant to them.

For a lot of people who work in health care, the stories submitted by employees across the state described life at work as they see it every day. For those who are not part of that every day routine, the stories were amazing glimpses into the hearts and souls of the people who provide care in Wisconsins hospitals.

WHA sent out nearly 50 press releases statewide announcing the recipients. Reporters from across the state called WHA, some wrote columns, others just wanted to reprint the essay. All were impressed with the dedication and commitment of these employees, which was so evident in their essays.

One of the challenges identified by the American Hospital Associations Workforce Commission is that of improving the image of health care occupations. The Commissions recently published findings, "In Our Hands," identified WHAs statewide advertising campaign conducted last fall as an example of a program that worked to improve the image of health care occupations and increase public awareness of hospital employment. The long-term solution to the workforce shortage will not be in campaigns, but rather by our ability to tell people the story of health care as seen through the eyes and told through the words of those who provide the care, or by employees who assist direct caregivers. The stories and experiences that hospital employees share with others about their workplace, occupation, co-workers, and their patients, are more moving and persuasive than even the best television ad.

As we all work to improve the health care environment, it is important that we celebrate our workforce. They tell their stories, they truly care, and they understand the meaning of their work and the privilege of being invited into their patients lives. By encouraging them to share their stories we extend that meaning and value to all those around them. And they encourage and inspire others to explore careers in health care because of its wealth of benefits and opportunities.

We are already looking forward to next years celebration of Wisconsins health care workforce. The importance of celebrating our workforce locally and statewide cannot be understated.

Pride Program Recipients Show Deep Commitment to Patients, Community

May, 2002

The first statewide recognition program for celebrating the contributions that employees in hospitals make to the quality of health care in their communities will honor 57 people on May 30 in Wausau. Recipients were selected by their hospitals based on essays that they wrote about what inspires and motivates them to work in a health care setting. These personal stories will be published by WHA into a booklet and used in press releases to communicate the unique rewards of a career in health care to those who are considering a health care occupation.

"As we put the book together and read the individual stories, the commitment that employees have to their careers and to the people they serve is striking. From admitting clerks to nurses, the stories are heartfelt and reflect the authors deep concern for their patients and for the well-being of their community," said WHAs Mary Kay Grasmick.

If you submitted an entry to WHA for the Pride Program, and do not see their name on this list, contact Mary Kay or Carol Pfefferkorn immediately.
