Wisconsin's nonprofit hospitals and health systems reinforce their commitment to service across the state

WHA announced on Nov. 28 that the state’s hospitals contributed an astounding sum of more than $2.1 billion in community benefits and charity care in fiscal year 2022. This remarkable achievement exemplifies the deep commitment of Wisconsin’s hospitals and health systems to the well-being and betterment of their communities.

The charitable care and financial support provided by Wisconsin hospitals has made a profound impact on countless individuals and families throughout the state. By going above and beyond their core mission of providing quality health care services, these hospitals have demonstrated their vital role as cornerstones of their communities. The annual Community Benefits Report outlines a range of care provided by Wisconsin hospitals including charity care, subsidized health services and community health improvement. These provisions aim to improve overall public health and support those in need.

“We are very proud of Wisconsin’s hospitals for their exceptional commitment to the health and well-being of communities across the state,” said Eric Borgerding, WHA President and CEO. “Their substantial investments in community benefits and charity care reflect their firm belief in delivering compassionate care to every individual in need.”

The $2.1 billion investment is a testament to Wisconsin hospitals’ recognition of the importance of accessible health care and their responsibility to address the evolving needs of patients.
