Suicide is preventable. Unfortunately, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, suicide is a top 10 leading cause of death in Wisconsin. Aurora Medical Center - Kenosha believes everyone has a role in helping to prevent suicide. Zero Suicide is an aspirational challenge and practical framework for transformation toward safer suicide prevention care. When it comes to patient safety, we believe the only acceptable number of losses due to errors in quality of care is zero. Zero Suicide applies that life-saving mindset to preventing suicide.
Interactions with hospital teammates are a critical part of any patient experience. For many people at risk, seeking medical care at our hospital may be the first or only time a community member will interact with someone who can help. It’s important to take this time to identify individuals with suicide risk by completing a comprehensive screening and assessment. In 2024, our hospital completed 23,773 screenings using a standardized risk assessment tool. Of those screened, 246 individuals were identified at risk and were referred for follow-up care and other community-based support programs.
