Strong family relationships help children succeed in school and in life. To foster these relationships, Aspirus Riverview Hospital in collaboration with Wisconsin Rapids Public School District (WRPS) funded the Spring 2023 Families and Schools Together (FAST©) program.
FAST© - Elementary School Level is an internationally acclaimed parent engagement program designed to help children succeed in school by strengthening supportive relationships at home. Based on evidence-based practices and rigorously tested, FAST empowers parents as effective family leaders, connects families with schools, and fosters a community committed to children's well-being and education. FAST activities aim to strengthen family bonds, empower parents, enhance positive communication, and improve children's academic performance and emotional functioning.
Educators report that FAST© parents become more involved in their child’s school, and WRPS found this to be true. They also see an increase in a child’s ability to learn after attending the program. FAST© parents say they have a better relationship with their child.
Fifteen families graduated from two WPS Spring 2023 FAST© programs. Parents and their children attended up to eight facilitated sessions, led by a team comprised of a parent partner, school staff, and two community partners - all working together to empower parents and connect families to the school and broader community.
A Families and Schools Together (FAST©) session typically begins with a welcoming social time and a shared meal to build community. Participants then engage in structured group activities including playtime, where parents interact with their children to strengthen their bond. The session also includes skill-building exercises and dedicated parent support time for discussing strategies and resources. Families set goals for their children's growth and reflect on the day during a closing circle. Follow-up and evaluation ensure the program's effectiveness and address any needs for improvement.
Parents reported significant improvement in their parent-child relationship, as well as with their children’s social competence. Parents’ post-program surveys shared positive feedback, including, “His patience is a lot better, and he listens more.” “I was pleasantly surprised.” Teachers’ post-program surveys also were positive, including, “This child was very excited about the program and talked a lot about what she did each time. It was a positive experience for her!” and “This family has a fresh start, thanks to FAST©!”
“Strengthening communities is a primary component of Aspirus Health’s mission,” said Sarah Beversdorf, Aspirus Community Health Program Manager. “We are especially proud to support programs like FAST©, which not only strengthen families within our communities but also enhance relationships between community partners.”
