Mile Bluff Medical Center Breaks Barriers to Affordable Care
Mile Bluff’s diabetes education team hosts monthly group meetings and attends public events to provide resources and education to the community.
In today’s healthcare landscape, financial concerns often prevent individuals from seeking the care they need. At Mile Bluff Medical Center, however, compassion and community come first. The medical center has made it a priority to help serve medically underinsured and uninsured individuals, ensuring that no one is denied care due to cost. Mile Bluff’s efforts go beyond emergency and inpatient services. Recognizing that fear of medical costs can lead people to delay essential preventative care, the hospital hosts monthly health fairs at its various locations. These events offer free and low-cost screenings. Attendees can receive blood pressure checks, blood sugar screenings, and risk factor health reports—all at no cost. Cholesterol testing is also available at a low cost, making it an affordable option for those managing chronic conditions. In addition, Mile Bluff offers free diabetes group education, available to anyone interested in learning more about managing or preventing the condition. These sessions provide valuable information, support, and resources to help individuals and caregivers take a more active role in diabetes care. By combining preventative screenings and education at no or low-cost, Mile Bluff Medical Center is removing financial barriers and helping individuals take charge of their health and strengthening the well-being of the community.
Mile Bluff Builds a Stronger Team for an Improved Tomorrow
Mile Bluff’s expert providers lead hands-on training sessions in birth and newborn emergency care, equipping healthcare professionals with essential skills and knowledge.
Mile Bluff Medical Center is taking bold steps to strengthen and expand its healthcare workforce by investing in education, training, and career development. As part of a broader strategy to meet the demands of today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, Mile Bluff has implemented a range of initiatives designed to shape skilled professionals and create meaningful career pathways for those entering or advancing within the field.
Two of Mile Bluff’s most impactful initiatives have been its certified nursing assistant and medical assistant training programs. Recognizing the need to attract and retain skilled professionals, the organization covers tuition costs and provides hands-on, on-the-job education for individuals pursuing these roles. In addition to these programs, Mile Bluff extends its commitment to education across state lines by offering specialized training programs for healthcare providers throughout the region. These include Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics and the Neonatal Resuscitation Program—critical courses that equip professionals to manage birth and newborn emergencies. What sets these programs apart is that they are taught by Mile Bluff’s own expert providers, whose clinical experience ensures participants receive top-tier training rooted in real-world practice. The medical center remains active in the community and regularly participates in career fairs to educate students and job seekers about the wide range of opportunities available in healthcare. These events help inspire the next generation of compassionate, skilled professionals while highlighting the rewarding career paths within the industry.
Through these combined initiatives, Mile Bluff Medical Center is not only addressing current staffing needs but also laying the foundation for a more resilient, well-prepared healthcare workforce—one that will serve the community for years to come.
Addressing Community Health Needs Through Action and Compassion
Members of Mile Bluff’s administration team attend area fairs and purchase livestock to support local young farmers. The meat is then donated to area residents.
Mile Bluff Medical Center is taking meaningful steps to address priorities identified in the recent Community Health Needs Assessment, one of which is improving access to affordable and nutritious food. Recognizing the essential link between nutrition and overall wellness, the medical center has launched initiatives that encourage healthier food choices and strengthen community support—guided by the belief that true wellness starts with access to wholesome food and a connected community.
One way the medical center addresses this priority is by serving as a community supported agriculture pick-up site, helping ensure access to fresh, nutritious, locally grown produce. In addition, Mile Bluff recently Joined Juneau County’s “Grow a Row” program, a new initiative that makes fresh produce available to area residents at no cost. Additionally, Mile Bluff Medical Center supports local initiatives in meaningful ways—such as attending livestock shows at area fairs and purchasing animals from young farmers. This not only supports youth agricultural education but also allows Mile Bluff to give back to the communities that it serves. With the animals purchased, members of the administrative team personally distribute free beef to area residents, helping improve local access to healthy foods. Mile Bluff’s dedication to improving access to affordable and nutritious food also shines through the medical center’s involvement in local events such as the Community Sharing Supper. Staff members regularly volunteer at these events—proudly serving meals, connecting with the community, and building relationships.
These efforts reflect the organization’s belief that healthcare is more than treating illness; it’s about building a healthier, stronger community. By listening to the needs of the community and responding with compassion, Mile Bluff Medical Center continues to make meaningful strides toward a better future for all.
Mile Bluff Ensures Access to High Quality Healthcare for the Communities it Serves
Mile Bluff’s financial counselors are available to assist with billing questions and concerns—supporting patients every step of the way.
In today’s economy, the fear of medical bills can discourage individuals—especially those with limited or no health insurance—from seeking necessary care. Mile Bluff Medical Center remains committed to breaking down these barriers by ensuring that healthcare services are accessible to everyone in the communities it serves. A key part of this effort is the work of Mile Bluff’s billing specialist team members, who provide patients with financial guidance and support. The group’s goal is to help individuals navigate the complexities of medical billing and take proactive steps toward managing healthcare expenses.
The team’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. One patient reached out in appreciation, saying: “Thank you for going above and beyond with helping me make payments on my account. You were all very knowledgeable and helpful.” Another expressed, “We wanted to thank you for your time and attention to help us better understand our bills. We feel more confident in understanding your billing process.”
Recognizing that healthcare costs can often be unexpected and difficult to manage, Mile Bluff offers CareCredit, a flexible payment option designed to help patients cover out-of-pocket expenses. In addition, the medical center’s charity care program continues to make a significant impact. In the most recent fiscal year, the program forgave more than 1,103 cases, totaling approximately $784,366 in uncompensated care.
Through the team’s comprehensive financial guidance, programs and support tools, Mile Bluff Medical Center helps address concerns with solutions that help reduce the financial burden associated with medical services. These initiatives reflect the organization’s core belief: everyone deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their financial situation.
