Improving Healthcare Access by Reducing Transportation Barriers
Experiencing transportation barriers can lead to unmet healthcare needs for community members, specifically among groups who face other barriers to accessing care. Identifying and understanding then addressing these barriers are the first steps toward improving health access. Addressing transportation issues can improve health outcomes for people by enhancing accessibility and reducing travel costs for patients. It’s a win for the hospital too as increasing access to reliable transportation may also reduce the number of no-show appointments. At Aurora Medical Center – Manitowoc County, we provide cab and bus vouchers to people who lack resources to travel to and from our hospital. For some people who arrive at our hospital Emergency Department seeking non-emergent care, we are able to help them schedule a same day appointment with one of our local free clinic partners and our teammates able to provide them with a cab or bus voucher to help them get there. In 2024, our hospital subsidized 569 complimentary rides.
