Emplify Health Partners with Police, Schools to Share Critical Mental Health Message
Emplify Health by Bellin Behavioral Health responded to a critical community issue in summer 2025, joining forces with the Green Bay Police Department and Green Bay Area Public School District to spotlight mental health by focusing on a type of online scam known as sextortion. Sextortion scams typically involve individuals posing as members of the opposite sex, often targeting teenagers and young adults. These scammers engage in conversations with their victims, eventually persuading them to exchange explicit photos or videos. The scammers then bully victims into giving them money, goods or continued photos or videos under the threat of sharing this content with victims’ friends and families. The awareness effort was launched after a Wisconsin case resulted in a teen taking his life, raising the close-to-home profile of the crime. Not all cases make headlines, making it hard to understand the full impact sextortion scams are having.
Tiffany Born, a Pediatric Psychologist with Emplify Health by Bellin, has worked with patients who have fallen victim to these scams and are left with feelings of embarrassment, depression, shame, anxiety and even suicidal ideations.
“Sextortion scams target the most vulnerable and coerce them into feeling like they did something wrong,” noted Born. “Victims often feel like they have no way out of the situation.”
Born was joined by Commander Rick Belanger of the Green Bay Police Department and Green Bay Area Public School District Superintendent Vicki Bayer in a well-attended July news conference at Emplify Health by Bellin Behavioral Health (formerly Bellin Psychiatric Center). The trio offered important information about the scam trend, along with advice for prevention and coping for parents and teens.
Mental health is one of the areas singled out in Brown County’s Community Health Needs Assessment. It’s also an issue of focus across the state in the Gundersen Region of Emplify Health, which held a simultaneous news conference on the same topic to help amplify the issue. The two events resulted in 48 total mentions across 20 media outlets, generating $4.1 million in Ad Value Equivalency (AVE) — meaning the message was shared far and wide.
“This joint, simultaneous news conference was a great way to shed light on an issue that affects patients and community members across our health system and beyond,” Born said. “The coverage stats are great to see, but what really matters is making a difference in the lives of those we serve. If we can help even one teen or family by raising awareness or sharing skills to cope, then this was worth it.”
