A simple tool to improve postpartum health outcomes
Orange wristbands given to women when discharged from delivery are a visual cue to medical professionals to consider post-birth complications during urgent and emergency care situations.
In the weeks following childbirth, new moms face heightened risk of serious complications like hemorrhage, preeclampsia, sepsis, cardiomyopathy and more. In an effort to alert emergency responders and clinicians to these potentially life-threatening complications during post-partum medical emergencies, SSM Health introduced the state’s first post-birth alert program.
The initiative, which rolled out at SSM Health hospitals across Wisconsin, aims to improve maternal health outcomes and potentially save lives using a bright orange alert bracelets to signal recent childbirth to medical teams, especially in emergency situations. This simple visual cue can make emergency responders and clinicians aware of potential complications earlier in a medical emergency and allow for faster diagnosis and treatment.
The post-birth alert program is going well, with a positive reception by both patients and staff. In the first six months of the program, SSM Health has provided the alert bracelets and postpartum education to more than 1,500 women.
