Trauma Simulations Highlight Dangers of Impaired and Distracted Driving
Scene of a mock car crash due to impaired driving
Mayo Clinic Health System – Chippewa Valley (MCHS – Chippewa Valley) hosted simulated scene plays at area high schools in Bloomer, Cadott and Chippewa Falls to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving and distracted driving. These trauma simulations are timed before or during high-risk periods for drinking and driving, such as the prom and graduation seasons. Area high schools partnered with MCHS – Chippewa Valley, Mayo One, local law enforcement and other area organizations to hold prom trauma simulations.
Following the simulation, speakers discussed what happens after a crash. A police officer explains the charges an intoxicated or distracted driver may face, a healthcare professional speaks about victims’ medical treatment and possible long-term health effects, a hospital chaplain describes the process by which a deceased victim’s family is notified, and a funeral director discusses how they help a family plan a funeral. Mayo Clinic Health System has partnered with other area organizations to bring these simulations to schools for more than 20 years throughout the Chippewa Valley area.
